Thesis: "Pathogenic fish bacteria"
Scientific Interests and Goals:
Biogeography of microbes:
For the attached-living Rhodopirellula, a benthic microaerophilic bacterium, it was recently demonstrated that three closely-related species are present in the european seas. Culture independent studies of European costal sediments will gain insight into the biogeography of Rhodopirellula strains applying novel PCR primers, targeting several housekeeping genes.
Physiological differences between the three european Rhodopirellula strains will be investigated by species competition experiments in the changing environmental conditions (T, S, light, nutrients). The outcome will be screened by FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization), with newly designed oligonucleotide probes for targeting these three strains.
