Scientific Interests and Goals:Although coastal sediments seep large amounts of methane, the ocean adds a minor amount to the atmosphere. Most of the methane is microbially oxidized prior to emission via the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). However, little is known about the key microbial players mediating AOM.
My task is to characterize marine methanotrophic communities by using and improving upon molecular tools (comparative 16S rRNA gene and genomic analysis, CARD-FISH, qPCR, and FACS). Study sites include coastal areas offshore Romania and New Zealand.
